All About Alice In Wonderland
Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland began as a novel about a young girl who finds herself on an adventure in a fantasy world, after falling through a rabbit hole.
Popular among adults as well as children, the novel was written in 1865 by English author Lewis Carroll. Since then, it’s been adapted into several films, TV series, and performances, one of which is Disney’s ‘Alice In Wonderland’.
The story follows a young girl named Alice who, while sitting with her sister, spots a White Rabbit with a pocket watch and follows it down a rabbit hole. This leads her into the whimsical and often absurd world of Wonderland. As she navigates this strange new place, she encounters a series of peculiar characters and undergoes surreal adventures.
‘Alice In Wonderland’ has had a significant impact on popular culture, inspiring numerous adaptations in film, theater, television, and more. Phrases and characters from the book have become part of everyday language and culture.
The Alice In Wonderland card soldiers also play a significant role in the Queen’s croquet game, a scene that depicts the absurdity and chaos of Wonderland. The game is played with live flamingos as mallets and hedgehogs as balls, with the card soldiers themselves serving as the arches through which the hedgehogs must be hit.
The unpredictable nature of the game, coupled with the Queen’s frequent outbursts of “Off with their heads!” creates a sense of disarray and highlights the surreal and arbitrary nature of Wonderland’s rules and society.

What You’ll Need
Method
1. For making the heads of the Alice in Wonderland card soldiers, draw a large card symbol that matches the suit of the card (either a heart, diamond, club, or spade). The width of the symbol should be half the width of the card. Do this on colored paper that matches the color of the card.
2. The details on the face will depend on the suit of the card soldier:
For A Heart Card Soldier: Draw a heart shape on white paper (smaller than its head), and then cut it out. Draw two more hearts on this white heart: a small black one near the top and a larger pink one below it.
3. Turn the white heart upside down and glue it onto the red heart (the head) making sure only one of them is upside down. With the red heart the right way around, glue it onto the card.
4. Cut two strips of colored paper, each measuring 3 cm x 2 cm. Choose the color based on the suit of the card. Fold each strip in half lengthwise by bringing the two longest edges together.
5. Once folded, make a small mark in the center of the folded edge of each piece.
6. Starting at one edge, cut a small horizontal slit towards the center mark. This slit will hold the card in place.
7. On the colored paper (matching the suit), draw a large heart as wide as the card, then cut it out.
8. Take the card and place the paper heart behind it, adjusting so that the top of the heart is sticking out above the card by about a centimeter.
9. With the top of the heart sticking out, fold it over the front of the card to create shoulders, then let the rest of the heart fold behind the card, like a cape. Adjust the position so that none of the heart behind the card is sticking out, then glue the folded heart in place to the card.
10. Create the arms with colored pipe cleaners and tape them onto the back of the card securely.
11. For the spear, draw either a heart, diamond, club, or spade on colored paper and glue it to a skewer, then color the skewer in black or red. The spear should roughly be the height of the card.
12. Once drawn, cut out and attach to one of the card soldier’s hands. Take the folds made for the feet and open them up, before placing them on a flat surface in an upside-down ‘v’ shape.
13. Enjoy your DIY Alice In Wonderland card soldiers! Position them around your event space or add stands to the back of each soldier to make them freestanding.
Whether you’re hosting a themed party or looking for a charming addition to your playroom, these card soldiers are sure to bring a touch of Wonderland fantasy to your day.
