Calling all fun-loving parents, it’s time to engage your little ones in a captivating art project with rock painting. This crafts activity is an opportunity to fuel their creativity and create lasting memories.
Did you know that the oldest known cave painting is more than 64,000 years old? Rock painting is nothing new, but there’s a slightly more portable version you can try, in the form of pebble painting. Rock painting is a fun way to get creative with color, and the finished result is a great gift or piece of decor for your room.
Get ready to apply your imagination and discover the joy of rock painting together as a family. You could paint it to fit your bedroom’s color scheme or paint a themed one for a holiday or event like Mother’s Day or Christmas.
What You’ll Need
- Pebbles (try to find smooth ones, not jagged rocks)
- Anything else you want to decorate your rocks with!
Method
1. Go outside and hunt for rocks for rock painting. Look for smooth pebbles about as big as your palm. Larger and smaller ones also work, but palm-sized is the most convenient. The pebbles should be smooth, if they’re super bumpy they’ll be difficult to work with for rock painting. It’s also going to be easier for you to paint if they’re a paler color.
2. Wash your pebbles to get rid of any dirt and grit. Leave your rocks to dry.
3. Decorate your rocks any way you wish using paint, marker pens, or any other decorative features!
4. Leave the rock to dry.
5. You may need to add a second layer at this stage.
6. When they’re dry, you can leave them as they are, or apply a varnish. This will seal the design better and make them less likely to chip away. If you don’t have any actual varnish, you could paint it with a clear nail polish. Just make sure you have permission to use it!
